Yes, tarot can give a yes or no. The catch is that the answer comes from a convention, not from the cards. Readers who use yes-or-no draws agree on very little, and the card you pull depends on the method you chose. Use a yes-or-no draw to test your own gut feeling on a small question. For anything bigger, change the question.

You want a one-word answer so you can stop going back and forth. It helps to know what a one-word answer is made of.

Why the answer is shaky

There is no single rule for turning a card into "yes" or "no." Methods differ. Some readers say an upright card means yes and a reversed card means no. Some label each card in advance as yes, no or maybe. Others draw several cards and count. Run the same question through two of these and you can get opposite answers from the same deck.

That is not a flaw you can fix by finding the right method. It tells you what the answer is: a rule you chose, applied to a shuffled card. If the result surprises you, notice that you can usually tell what you were hoping for. That reaction is the useful part. Our guide on whether tarot works explains why.

A three-question screen

Before you ask a yes-or-no question, ask yourself three things.

  1. Is the question narrow? "Should I go to Saturday's dinner?" is narrow. "Should I stay in this relationship?" is not.
  2. Is it mine to decide? Questions about what another person feels or will do are not yours to answer. Reframe them around what you can do.
  3. Could I act on either answer? If a "no" would be ignored and you would ask again, you are looking for permission, not information.

Pass all three and a yes-or-no draw is a harmless coin flip with better pictures. Fail one and rewrite the question.

Six rewrites for common questions

Yes-or-no question What it hides A better version
Will he come back? You cannot know what he will do What do I want from this, and what is stopping me from deciding?
Should I take the job? Both sides of the decision are missing What would I need to be true to say yes?
Does she love me? Treats a feeling as a fact What am I noticing in how we treat each other?
Am I going to get promoted? Assumes only luck is involved What can I show my manager in the next three months?
Is it a good time to move? "Good" is undefined What am I hoping a move will change?
Is this the right person? One answer for a whole relationship What does this relationship bring out in me, good and difficult?

The pattern is the same every time. The better versions ask about you, your choices, or what you are noticing. A card can prompt thinking about those. It cannot rule on the other person.

A worked example

Take a question many people ask: "Should I text him back?"

Version 1: "Should I text him back?" A "yes" draw gives you permission you may regret, and a "no" draw gives you a reason to wait that you may resent. Either way you have a card to argue with.

Version 2: "What do I want to happen if I reply?" This asks you to say what you are hoping for. Write the answer before you draw. If it is "to feel less anxious," a text may not be the tool.

Version 3: "What would I say if I knew he would not respond?" This takes the other person out of the question. Your answer is often the message you wanted to send, or a sign that you did not want to send one.

None of this predicts anything. It uses the card as a prompt and a spare few minutes to find out what you think. If you want more examples of open questions, 30 questions to ask a psychic has a longer list, and how to prepare for a psychic reading shows how to add background.

Common questions about yes-or-no tarot

Are yes-or-no tarot readings accurate?

No tarot reading has been shown to predict events. A yes-or-no draw is best treated as a gut check. If you disagree with the answer, that tells you something about what you wanted.

Why do I get different answers when I ask twice?

Because the answer depends on a shuffled deck and a method you chose. If it changes each time, it was not stable information. If it stays the same and you keep asking, you may be looking for permission.

How many times can I ask the same question?

Asking again rarely brings relief. A few days between attempts, and writing down what you actually want, usually helps more than a second draw.

Can I turn a yes-or-no question into a full reading question?

Yes. Swap "will" and "should" for "what" and "how," and ask about influences, patterns and choices that belong to you.

Is there a yes-or-no question a written reading can answer?

A reader can respond to one, but most will move toward the reasons behind it. Check the offer page of any service to see how it handles questions.
