What "turning direct" actually means

Venus never stops or reverses. It orbits the Sun faster than Earth does, and every 19 months or so it catches up with us and passes between Earth and the Sun. Around that pass, our own motion makes Venus look as if it slides backward against the stars for about six weeks. "Stationing direct" is the moment that apparent backward slide ends and Venus seems to stand still before moving forward again.

This time the pass happened in late October. That is why Venus vanished from the evening sky in early autumn and is now back as a morning star.
