Nothing, on the night. At new moon the lit half of the Moon faces the Sun and away from us. The Moon also rises and sets with the Sun, as NASA explains.
A thin crescent returns low in the west just after sunset. By our calculation it is about 4 degrees up at sunset on November 10 from New York and New Delhi, and still below the horizon from London. On November 11 it is 9 to 12 degrees up from New York and New Delhi, so the 11th is the easier evening. Sydney sees it well on the 10th.
The waxing half of the cycle ends at the full moon, the Beaver Moon, on November 24 at 14:53 UTC. The Old Farmer's Almanac lists it as a supermoon. The 2026 eclipses all fell in February, March and August.
Three calendars, one dark moon
- Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which follows the seasons. The Sun is in Scorpio from October 23 to November 22, so this is the Scorpio new moon.
- The sky itself says Libra. By the official constellation borders, the Sun and Moon stand in front of Libra's stars on November 9. The Sun reaches the constellation Scorpius only around November 23, by our calculation, and leaves about a week later.
- Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, set about 24 degrees behind the tropical one in the common Lahiri system. There, this new moon is in Libra, or Tula. The gap between the two zodiacs comes from the slow wobble of Earth's axis.
- The Hindu calendar marks it as the Amavasya, the dark-moon day, of Diwali. Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8. Drik Panchang gives the New Delhi Amavasya as 11:27 a.m. on November 8 to 12:31 p.m. on November 9, ending within a minute of the astronomical new moon.
So the diyas lit on Diwali night burn on the eve of the Scorpio new moon.
