Sagittarius season 2026 begins on Sunday, November 22, when the Sun reaches 0 degrees Sagittarius at 07:23 UTC, which is 12:53 p.m. IST. It ends at the December solstice, at 20:50 UTC on December 21, or 2:20 a.m. IST on December 22. In the Golden Dawn system that most English-language tarot decks follow, the sign's card is Temperance. Its three ten-degree slices, called decans, go to the Eight, Nine and Ten of Wands.
You have seen that Sagittarius season starts soon and that Temperance is its tarot card. You want the real dates and what the three decan cards are supposed to mean.
These pairings are a 19th-century convention for reflection. They do not forecast your month.
The season at a glance
| Stretch | Card | Planet in Book T | From (IST) | To (IST) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whole sign | Temperance | none (Hebrew letter Samekh) | Nov 22, 12:53 p.m. | Dec 22, 2:20 a.m. |
| 0 to 10 degrees | Eight of Wands | Mercury | Nov 22, 12:53 p.m. | Dec 2, 10:06 a.m. |
| 10 to 20 degrees | Nine of Wands | Moon | Dec 2, 10:06 a.m. | Dec 12, 6:27 a.m. |
| 20 to 30 degrees | Ten of Wands | Saturn | Dec 12, 6:27 a.m. | Dec 22, 2:20 a.m. |
In UTC the decans begin at 07:23 on November 22, 04:36 on December 2 and 00:57 on December 12. We calculated these from the Sun's position. The solstice time matches the US Naval Observatory.
Two moons fall inside the season. The Beaver Moon is full on November 24 at 8:23 p.m. IST, in the Eight of Wands stretch. The new moon of December 9, at 6:22 a.m. IST, sits at about 17 degrees Sagittarius, in the Nine of Wands stretch.
If you use a Vedic calendar, your dates will differ. The sidereal Sun enters Dhanu on December 16, at 10:29 a.m. for New Delhi according to Drik Panchang. Our New Moon in Scorpio post explains why the two zodiacs sit about 24 degrees apart.
Temperance: the card for the whole season
Book T, the Golden Dawn's tarot manuscript from the late 1880s, names Temperance "The Daughter of the Reconcilers" and places it on Sagittarius through the Hebrew letter Samekh. It lists the match without explaining it.
Arthur Edward Waite, a Golden Dawn member, designed the 1909 deck with the artist Pamela Colman Smith. In his 1910 guidebook the angel is "pouring the essences of life from chalice to chalice", with "one foot upon the earth and one upon waters". His fortune-telling meanings are short: "Economy, moderation, frugality, management, accommodation."
Waite also mentions older meanings that "refer to changes in the seasons", and says his version drops them. So the Golden Dawn's season card was, in Waite's own deck, deliberately not about seasons.
A question for the whole five weeks: where am I pouring too much, and where too little?
Eight of Wands: November 22 to December 2
Book T calls this card the Lord of Swiftness, Mercury in Sagittarius. Its notes open with "Too much force applied too suddenly. Very rapid rush, but quickly passed and expended." Waite's picture is a flight of wands through open country, and his meaning is "swiftness, as that of an express messenger".
Prompt: which message have you been putting off, and what would happen if you sent it this week?
Nine of Wands: December 2 to December 12
The Lord of Great Strength, the Moon in Sagittarius. Book T describes a "Tremendous and steady force that cannot be shaken" and a "Victory, preceded by apprehension and fear." Waite's figure leans on his staff with "an expectant look", and he reads the card as "strength in opposition".
Prompt: what are you still guarding that no longer needs a guard?
Ten of Wands: December 12 to December 22
The Lord of Oppression, Saturn in Sagittarius. Book T is blunt: "Cruel and overbearing force and energy, but applied only to material and selfish ends." It adds that the card can also mean "generosity, disinterestedness and self-sacrifice" when it falls well. Waite draws "a man oppressed by the weight of the ten staves which he is carrying".
Prompt: which one stick could you put down before the solstice?
A four-card season log
No shuffling is needed. On November 22, take Temperance and the three Wands out of your deck and lay them in a row. Each time a new stretch begins, write one line under its card about what you want from those ten days. On the solstice, read the four lines back.
An invented example of one person's log:
- Temperance: "Stop saying yes to every plan in December."
- Eight of Wands: "Answer the job email I have been avoiding."
- Nine of Wands: "Stop checking the bank app three times a day."
- Ten of Wands: "Hand the party cooking to my brother."

Other decks give other answers
Aleister Crowley's Thoth deck keeps Sagittarius but renames Temperance "Art". Marseille-style decks carry no zodiac signs at all. Use the pairings if they help you think, and drop them if they do not.
