The Beaver Moon is full on Tuesday, November 24, 2026, at 14:53 UTC. In India that is 8:23 p.m. IST, an easy evening to watch, with the Moon well up in the eastern sky. In New York it is 9:53 a.m. EST, so viewers there should look on the evening of the 23rd or the 24th. Western astrology puts this full moon at 2 degrees 20 minutes of Gemini. If your calendar or app says Taurus instead, it is probably not a mistake, and the section on signs below explains why. Whether it counts as a supermoon depends on which definition you use.

You saw that November's full moon is a supermoon in Gemini, then your panchang or a moon calendar said Taurus. You want the real time for your city and an answer you can trust.

It is also the same night as Kartik Purnima, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Dev Deepawali. A full moon is a good evening to stop and think, and that is how this page treats it. Nothing here predicts what the night will bring.

The evening, hour by hour (India time)

All times are IST. Moonrise and sunset times are for the city named, from our own ephemeris calculation, and can differ by a few minutes from a local panchang.

Time (IST) What happens Worth knowing
Mon Nov 23, 11:42 p.m. Purnima tithi begins (Drik Panchang, New Delhi) The festival day is Tuesday, because the tithi is in force at sunrise on the 24th
Tue Nov 24, about 4:40 p.m. The Moon crosses from Taurus into Gemini in the tropical zodiac Before this moment, even Western charts show a Taurus Moon
4:25 p.m. to 5:37 p.m. Moonrise: Kolkata 4:25, Delhi about 5:00, Chennai 5:19, Bengaluru 5:31, Mumbai 5:37 The Moon rises shortly before sunset because fullness comes later in the evening
5:08 p.m. to 7:47 p.m. Dev Deepawali lamp-lighting time in Varanasi (Drik Panchang) Watching the Moon climb over the ghats is part of the occasion for many visitors
8:23 p.m. Full moon, and the Purnima tithi ends within a minute of it From Delhi the Moon is about 41 degrees up in the east. From Mumbai about 34 degrees
Wed Nov 25, about 12:13 a.m. The Moon is highest over Delhi, almost straight overhead Bright enough to cast clear shadows
Thu Nov 26, about 2:24 a.m. Perigee, the Moon's closest point this orbit (about 359,350 km) Thirty hours after fullness, which matters for the supermoon question
Thu Nov 26, about 4:22 p.m. The Moon moves on into Cancer The Gemini window lasts about two days

Outside India. Dubai has fullness at 6:53 p.m. with the Moon already risen at 5:06. Singapore has it at 10:53 p.m., high in the sky. In London it falls at 2:53 p.m. GMT, before moonrise at about 3:18, so watch that evening. In New York the Moon rises at about 4:16 p.m. on the 24th, six hours after fullness. On the US West Coast fullness is at 6:53 a.m. PST. In Sydney it is 1:53 a.m. AEDT on Wednesday the 25th. A Moon one day either side of full looks the same to the naked eye.

Gemini or Taurus? Four reasons the calendars disagree

Search for this full moon's sign and you will find both answers on respectable-looking pages. We checked the Moon's position at 14:53 UTC and found four separate causes.

  1. Day labels. Some moon calendars give the sign for a whole date, worked out at midnight UTC. At 00:00 UTC on November 24 the Moon was still in Taurus. It crossed into Gemini about 11 hours later, roughly four hours before it became full. A calendar that labels the date by its midnight position will say Taurus.
  2. Vedic astrology. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which currently runs about 24 degrees behind the Western zodiac. In sidereal terms this full moon falls at about 8 degrees of Taurus, in the nakshatra Krittika. For an Indian reader both answers can be right at once. Western is Gemini and Vedic is Taurus.
  3. The actual stars. The tropical signs no longer line up with the constellations that gave them their names. On this night the Moon sits physically in the constellation Taurus, about two degrees from the Pleiades star cluster and 13 degrees from Aldebaran. BBC Sky at Night says it will be close to the Pleiades and Hyades. When an astronomy page says the Moon is in Taurus, it means the constellation.
  4. Plain error. At least one pagan calendar we checked gives Taurus with none of the reasons above. That happens.

So the answer depends on the question. "What does my Western horoscope say?" Gemini. "What does my panchang say?" Taurus. "What will I see if I look up?" The Moon beside the Pleiades. The New Moon in Scorpio post covers the tropical and sidereal split in more detail.

Is it a supermoon? It depends whose rule you use

There is no official definition. The term came from astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, and publishers draw the line in different places.

Source Rule Is November 24 a supermoon?
The Old Farmer's Almanac Nolle's broad rule, a full moon near the closest point of its orbit Yes, the first of three in a row (November, December, January)
BBC Sky at Night Similar broad rule Yes, the second of three in 2026 (January, November, December)
timeanddate.com A full moon closer than 360,000 km No. It is about 360,765 km away at fullness. Its next supermoon is December 24

What you will see matters more than the label. By our calculation this full moon looks about 2 percent wider than October's Hunter's Moon. Nobody can spot that by eye. The Almanac's "up to 8 percent larger and 16 percent brighter" compares a supermoon with a micromoon, the farthest full moon of the year, not with last month. The closest full moon of 2026 comes on December 24, about 356,740 km away.

The Moon will look huge near the horizon, though. That is the Moon illusion, which makes a low Moon look bigger than a high one, and it happens with every full moon.

Kartik Purnima and the stars behind the Moon

Hindu lunar months take their names from the nakshatra where that month's full moon usually falls. Kartika comes from Krittika, which is the Sanskrit name for the Pleiades. On November 24, 2026 the rule holds exactly. The full moon of Kartika sits beside the cluster the month is named after. Point binoculars just beside the Moon and you can see it for yourself. To the naked eye the Moon's glare hides most of the cluster.

The same evening carries three observances (dates from Drik Panchang).

  • Kartik Purnima, the full moon that closes the month of Kartika, with ritual bathing at dawn.
  • Guru Nanak Jayanti, the 557th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, a central government holiday in India.
  • Dev Deepawali in Varanasi, when the ghats are lit with lamps in the evening.

If you are marking any of these, follow your own family or community's timing. This page only lines up the clock times.

Why it is called the Beaver Moon

The Old Farmer's Almanac gives two explanations. In late autumn beavers retreat to their lodges for winter, and in the colonial fur trade this was the month to set beaver traps before the water froze. The Almanac says its moon names come from early Native American, Colonial American and European folklore. It also lists other November names: Digging or Scratching Moon (Tlingit), Deer Rutting Moon (Dakota and Lakota), Whitefish Moon (Algonquin), Frost Moon (Cree and Assiniboine) and Freezing Moon (Anishinaabe). None of these names relates to India, where the month already has its own name.

What astrologers say a Gemini full moon stirs up

In astrology a full moon is an opposition. The Sun sits at 2 degrees of Sagittarius and the Moon at 2 degrees of Gemini. Astrologers describe that axis as the big picture against the details: what you believe against what you actually know, the long plan against this week's messages. Uranus sits close to the Moon at about 3 degrees of Gemini, which astrologers read as sudden news or a change of mind. Mercury turned direct on November 13, so writers on this full moon often say stalled conversations will start moving again.

Treat these as planning prompts, not forecasts. Controlled tests have not shown that astrology predicts events or personality. The useful part is the question it hands you: where are you running on a belief you have not checked against the facts?

One question, asked two ways

This exercise uses the Sagittarius and Gemini axis as a writing prompt. It takes fifteen minutes and you need only a notebook.

  1. Write your question the Sagittarius way. Big, about meaning and direction. Start with "What is..." or "Where am I going with..."
  2. Rewrite it the Gemini way. Small, about facts and words. It should be something a conversation, a message or a search could answer this week.
  3. List what you actually know. Under the second version write three facts, things you have seen or been told, not things you assume.
  4. Pick one message. Choose one conversation or note that would add a fourth fact, and decide when you will have it.

An invented example, to show the shape. Sagittarius: "Is this job the right path for me?" Gemini: "What would my manager say if I asked about the team lead role in January?" Known facts: the role was advertised in March, two people from the team applied, and my last review was good. The message: ask for fifteen minutes next week. The big question is still there, but now it has a next step.

If you sealed a question on the new moon with our Open November 24 envelope, this is the evening to open it. Read it, and then run it through the four steps above.

Common questions

What time is the Beaver Moon in India in 2026?

The full moon is at 8:23 p.m. IST on Tuesday, November 24, 2026 (14:53 UTC). The Moon rises between about 4:25 p.m. in Kolkata and 5:37 p.m. in Mumbai, so it is already well up when it turns full.

Is the November 2026 full moon in Gemini or Taurus?

In Western (tropical) astrology it is in Gemini, at 2 degrees 20 minutes. In Vedic (sidereal) astrology it is in Taurus, at about 8 degrees, in Krittika. The Moon is also physically in the constellation Taurus near the Pleiades. Some calendars say Taurus because they label the whole date by the Moon's position at midnight UTC, before it changed sign.

Is the Beaver Moon 2026 a supermoon?

By the Old Farmer's Almanac's definition, yes, the first of three in a row. By timeanddate's stricter rule, no, because it is about 360,765 km away, just outside its 360,000 km cutoff. Either way it looks only about 2 percent wider than October's full moon.

Is Kartik Purnima on the same day as the Beaver Moon?

Yes. Kartik Purnima, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Dev Deepawali all fall on Tuesday, November 24, 2026. Drik Panchang gives the Purnima tithi as 11:42 p.m. on November 23 to 8:23 p.m. on November 24, IST.

Why is it called the Beaver Moon?

The Old Farmer's Almanac links the name to beavers retreating to their lodges before winter, and to the fur-trade custom of trapping them before the rivers froze. Other names for this moon include Frost Moon and Freezing Moon.

Can I still use the full moon if I miss the night?

Yes. The Moon looks full to the eye for about a day on either side, so November 23 to 25 all work for viewing or a reflection exercise.
