The Cold Moon turns full at 6:58 a.m. IST on Thursday, December 24, 2026 (01:28 UTC, per the US Naval Observatory). By then it is sinking into the western haze in Delhi and Mumbai, and it has already set in Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru. So in India the night to watch is Wednesday, December 23, from moonrise at dusk until dawn. It is the closest full moon of 2026, a supermoon on every common definition, and it sits in Cancer in Western astrology. The same evening is Margashirsha Purnima and Datta Jayanti.

You saw 'Cold Supermoon on December 24' and want to know when to actually look up in India, and what the night means in your calendar.

This page lines up the clock times and the sky. It does not predict what the night will bring. If you like to mark a full moon with a question, the short card pull near the end was written for this one.

Why India should watch on the night of December 23

Most full moons are easy to catch at the listed time. This one is not, because 6:58 a.m. is almost sunrise in India. A full moon sits opposite the Sun, so when the Sun is about to come up in the east, the Moon is about to go down in the west.

These times come from the US Naval Observatory's calculator for each city.

City Moonrise, Dec 23 Highest in the sky Moonset, Dec 24 Up at 6:58 a.m.?
Delhi 4:37 p.m. 12:02 a.m. 7:26 a.m. Yes, just above the horizon
Mumbai 5:20 p.m. 12:20 a.m. 7:19 a.m. Yes, just above the horizon
Kolkata 4:07 p.m. 11:15 p.m. 6:23 a.m. No, it set 35 minutes earlier
Chennai 5:04 p.m. 11:49 p.m. 6:34 a.m. No, it set 24 minutes earlier
Bengaluru 5:15 p.m. 12:00 a.m. 6:45 a.m. No, it set 13 minutes earlier

The Moon is 99 percent lit when it rises on the evening of the 23rd. Nobody can tell that from 100 percent by eye, so the whole night counts.

Two more things make this night unusual. First, the Moon climbs very high. A winter full moon sits opposite the low winter Sun, so it takes the high path the Sun takes in June. This year it climbs even a little higher than the June Sun does. Around midnight in Delhi it stands about 89 degrees up, almost straight overhead. Mumbai gets about 81 degrees and Chennai and Bengaluru about 75. If you want a photo with a building or a tree in it, try the hour after moonrise, when it is low in the east.

Second, the Moon is up for longer than the night. In Delhi it rises at 4:37 p.m. and sets at 7:26 a.m., about 14 hours and 49 minutes. The Sun is down from 5:30 p.m. to 7:11 a.m., about 13 hours and 41 minutes. The Moon is above the horizon for the whole night, with time to spare at both ends. This is why one of December's old names is the Long Night Moon.

The closest full moon of 2026

Supermoon labels often depend on whose rule you use. This time every common rule agrees. At fullness the Moon is about 356,740 km from Earth by our calculation, which matches the figure the Old Farmer's Almanac gives. That is under timeanddate's 360,000 km cutoff, and NASA's supermoon page lists December 24 among its upcoming supermoons. The Moon reaches perigee, its closest point this orbit, about seven hours after fullness, at roughly 356,650 km.

How much bigger does it look? Less than the word suggests.

Compared with Distance at fullness December's Moon looks
The farthest full moon of 2026 (May 31) About 406,140 km About 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter
Last month's Beaver Moon (November 24) About 360,760 km About 1 percent wider, which nobody can see

NASA puts the same idea plainly. At its closest, a full moon can look up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than the faintest Moon of the year. Side by side with May's Moon you would see the difference. Against last month's you would not. The large, low Moon you may see at moonrise is the Moon illusion, and it happens with every full moon.

The next full moon, the Wolf Moon on January 22, 2027, is the closest of 2027.

Cancer in the West, Gemini and Ardra in India

Ask three systems where this Moon is and you get three answers.

  • Western (tropical) astrology: 2 degrees 14 minutes of Cancer, opposite the Sun at 2 degrees of Capricorn. This is the sign most horoscope pages will give.
  • Vedic (sidereal) astrology: about 8 degrees of Gemini (Mithuna), in the nakshatra Ardra, using the Lahiri ayanamsa of about 24 degrees.
  • The constellations: the Moon sits inside the boundaries of Gemini on the sky.

A small calendar detail follows from this. Margashirsha takes its name from Mrigashira, the nakshatra where this month's full moon traditionally falls. Mrigashira ends at 6 degrees 40 minutes of sidereal Gemini. In 2026 the full moon lands about 1.4 degrees past that line, in the next nakshatra. The month name is a tradition about where the Moon usually is, not a measurement of where it is every year.

If you want the full explanation of why Western and Vedic signs differ, the Beaver Moon post walks through it.

Margashirsha Purnima and Datta Jayanti on December 23

Drik Panchang lists both on Wednesday, December 23, 2026, for New Delhi. The Purnima tithi runs from 10:47 a.m. on the 23rd to 6:57 a.m. on the 24th, so it ends a minute before the astronomical full moon on the USNO clock. A one-minute difference between two sources makes no practical difference.

Why the 23rd and not the 24th? A panchang day starts at sunrise. By sunrise on the 24th (7:11 a.m. in Delhi) the Purnima has already ended. Datta Jayanti marks the birth of Dattatreya, which tradition places at dusk (pradosh), and the full moon tithi is in force at dusk only on the 23rd. Drik Panchang also lists Annapurna Jayanti and Bhairavi Jayanti that day, and quotes the Bhagavad Gita line in which Krishna says that among months he is Margashirsha.

Times shift a little by city and by tradition. If you are fasting or doing a puja, follow your family's panchang. This page only lines up the clock.

Christmas Eve, and the name Cold Moon

For readers in Europe and the Americas this is the full moon of December 23, the night before Christmas Eve. For India it is the dawn of Christmas Eve itself. A full moon has not fallen on Christmas Day (in UTC) since 2015, and the next one is in 2034.

The Old Farmer's Almanac says Cold Moon is a Mohawk name. It lists Long Night Moon as a Mohican name, plus others such as Hoar Frost Moon (Cree) and Snow Moon (Haida, Cherokee). It adds that in Europe this was the Moon Before Yule. All of these are northern names for northern winters. Indian calendars already name this Moon after its month, Margashirsha.

What astrologers read into a Cancer full moon

Astrologers read a full moon as a pull between two opposite signs. Here that is Cancer and Capricorn. Cancer stands for home, family, food and the people who know you. Capricorn stands for work, duty, structure and your public role. In a holiday week the obvious question follows. Where has duty crowded out home, or the reverse?

Tarot has its own links to this sign. In the Golden Dawn's Book T, Cancer belongs to the Chariot, titled "the Lord of the Triumph of Light". The first ten degrees of Cancer, where this Moon sits, belong to the Two of Cups, which Book T calls the Lord of Love, with the keywords "Harmony, pleasure, mirth, subtlety". The Sun, at 2 degrees of Capricorn, sits in the decan of the Two of Pentacles, which the winter solstice post covers.

Read these as ideas to think with. No controlled study has found that astrology can forecast what happens to people. As a prompt for a family week, though, it works.

A three-card pull for the night of December 23

This takes about twenty minutes. Lay three cards in a row while the Moon is up, any time from moonrise on the 23rd to dawn on the 24th.

  1. The table. What I bring home to the people I live with or go back to.
  2. The desk. What I am carrying for work or duty that has followed me into the holiday.
  3. The window. One thing that has been left out in the cold and could be let in.

Read each card for its plain picture first. What is the figure doing, and what would that look like in your week? Then write one sentence per card. Finish with one small action you could take before the New Year, such as a call, a cancelled task or a meal.

An invented example, to show the shape. The table: Four of Swords, a figure resting. "I come home too tired to talk." The desk: Eight of Pentacles, someone working on coin after coin. "I am still finishing tasks nobody asked for by Friday." The window: Page of Cups. "A friend I keep meaning to message." The action: send that message on the 24th, and leave the laptop shut on the 25th. The cards do not know your week. Your sentences do the work.

If you would like a longer layout for the same week, the winter solstice spread has four positions tied to the turn of the year. For a card to carry through all of next year, see your 2027 tarot year card.
