The tarot card of the year for 2027 is Justice. Add the digits of the year, 2 + 0 + 2 + 7, and you get 11, which is Justice in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck most English-language readers use. Your personal 2027 card takes one more step: add your birth month and birth day to 2027, then add the digits of the total. Someone born on March 15 gets 3 + 15 + 2027 = 2045, and 2 + 0 + 4 + 5 = 11, so Justice again.

You saw that 2027 is a Justice year and want to know your own card. Two calculators gave you two different answers, and you want to know which one to trust.

This is a 20th-century numerology convention, popularised by the tarot author Mary K. Greer, who learned it from the teacher Angeles Arrien in 1977 and adapted it over the following years. It gives you a theme to think with for the year. It does not forecast what will happen to you.

The card for everyone: Justice, number 11

The shared card leaves your birthday out. Only the year counts, and 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11. Most guides stop there and call 2027 a Justice year.

Which card sits at number 11 depends on the deck. Arthur Edward Waite moved Justice to 11 when he designed his 1909 deck with Pamela Colman Smith. In his 1910 guidebook he wrote that Strength "has been interchanged with that of Justice, which is usually numbered eight", and added that "there is no cause for explanation." Older decks keep the earlier order.

Deck family Card XI Card VIII
Rider-Waite-Smith and most modern decks Justice Strength
Tarot de Marseille Strength (La Force) Justice
Crowley's Thoth deck Lust Adjustment

So if your deck is a Marseille or Thoth deck, 2027 is a Strength year in your own system. Neither answer is wrong. Pick the deck you actually read with and stay with it.

Waite's fortune-telling keywords for Justice are short: "Equity, rightness, probity, executive." Some readers also reduce 11 to 1 + 1 = 2 and add the High Priestess as a quieter second card. Others treat 11 as a master number and leave it alone.

Find your own 2027 card in two steps

  1. Add your birth month and your birth day. You get a number between 2 (January 1) and 43 (December 31).
  2. Find that number in the table below. The card next to it is your 2027 year card.

That is the whole method. The long form is month + day + 2027, then add the digits of the total, then add them again if the result is above 22. The table just does the arithmetic for you, because in 2027 the year part never changes.

Your birth year plays no part. Two people who share a birthday share a year card, whatever their ages.

If you grew up writing dates day first, as most of India does, you can relax about the order. 07/03 is 3 + 7 = 10 whether it means March 7 or July 3, so both birthdays get the same card.

The 2027 lookup table

Your month + day Your 2027 card Birthdays with this card Waite's first keywords (1910)
3 V The Hierophant 2 "Marriage, alliance, captivity"
4 or 13 VI The Lovers 15 "Attraction, love, beauty"
5, 14 or 23 VII The Chariot 28 "Succor, providence"
6, 15, 24 or 33 VIII Strength 39 "Power, energy, action"
7, 16, 25, 34 or 43 IX The Hermit 41 "Prudence, circumspection"
8, 17, 26 or 35 X Wheel of Fortune 39 "Destiny, fortune, success"
9, 18, 27 or 36 XI Justice 40 "Equity, rightness, probity"
10, 19, 28 or 37 XII The Hanged Man 39 "Wisdom, circumspection, discernment"
2, 11, 20, 29 or 38 XIII Death 41 "End, mortality, destruction"
12, 21, 30 or 39 XIV Temperance 40 "Economy, moderation, frugality"
22, 31 or 40 XV The Devil 26 "Ravage, violence, vehemence"
32 or 41 XVI The Tower 14 "Misery, distress, indigence"
42 XVII The Star 1 "Loss, theft, privation"

The counts cover the 365 days of an ordinary year. A February 29 birthday adds to 31, which gives the Devil.

Waite's keywords are an old fortune-teller's list, and several sound harsher than modern guides. For the Star he also gives a second reading, "hope and bright prospects". If you landed on Death, the Tower or the Devil, our guide to the scary cards reads them in full. None of them means the year will go badly.

Four worked examples

These are sample birthdays, not real readers.

  • March 15. 3 + 15 = 18. In the long form, 3 + 15 + 2027 = 2045, and 2 + 0 + 4 + 5 = 11. Justice, the same as the year card for everyone.
  • July 23. 7 + 23 = 30. Long form 2057, then 2 + 0 + 5 + 7 = 14. Temperance, which happens to be the card of Sagittarius season as well.
  • January 2. 1 + 2 = 3. Long form 2030, then 2 + 0 + 3 + 0 = 5. The Hierophant. Only January 2 and February 1 get this card in 2027.
  • December 30. 12 + 30 = 42. Long form 2069, then 2 + 0 + 6 + 9 = 17. The Star, and December 30 is the only birthday that reaches it.

Why another site gave you a different card

There are two ways people add the date, and in 2027 they disagree for most birthdays.

The method on this page adds the month, the day and the year as whole numbers. That is how Greer described it: you "add the month and day you were born to the current year." The other method splits everything into single digits first. For March 15 that is 3 + 1 + 5 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 20, Judgement, where the whole-number method gave Justice.

We ran every birthday through both. They give different cards for 278 of the 365 days. The whole-number method can only land on 13 cards in 2027. The single-digit method spreads people over 19.

The two methods also handle the top of the scale differently. Greer counts up to 22 and reads 22 as the Fool. The Tarot School in New York stops at 21 and never uses the Fool for a birth card, because "there is no such trump" numbered 22. Some calculators reduce 22 to 4, the Emperor. With the whole-number method none of this matters for 2027, because no birthday adds up to more than 17.

If you compare calculators, check which method each one uses before you compare the cards.

Why only 13 cards are possible in 2027

The smallest total anyone can reach is 1 + 1 + 2027 = 2029. The largest is 12 + 31 + 2027 = 2070. Every total in between has digits that add to somewhere from 5 to 17.

So every 2027 year card falls between the Hierophant (5) and the Star (17). On this method nobody gets the Magician, the Empress, the Moon, the Sun, the World or the Fool as a 2027 card. This is arithmetic, not a message about the year.

When does your 2027 card start?

Readers argue about this, and Greer herself gave more than one answer.

In her earlier book Tarot Constellations her answer was both. The year begins on January 1 for the things that happen to you, and from your birthday you start to act on what you learned. In Archetypal Tarot (2021), as summarised by the tarot writer Benebell Wen, she suggests that people born from January to June read the card by the calendar year, and people born from July to December read it from birthday to birthday.

The card itself is the same either way. Only the start date moves. If your birthday is in November, your 2026 card may feel more relevant for most of 2027 than your new one.

Using the card without letting it run your year

Treat the card as a question you return to three times.

  1. In early January. Write one line about what the card's keyword would ask of you this year.
  2. On your birthday. Read the line again. Add one sentence about what has changed.
  3. In December. Write one more line. Did the card's question turn out to be useful, beside the point, or the wrong way round?

An invented example, for a reader born on July 23 with Temperance:

  • January: "Temperance. Stop overcommitting at work and at home."
  • July 23: "Said no to two weekend events. Felt guilty, then fine."
  • December: "Useful. The year was not calm, but I stopped saying yes by reflex."

If a card does not fit, write that down too. A mismatch tells you as much as a match. For more journal prompts, see our tarot self-reflection guide, and does tarot work? covers what the evidence says about prediction.

Some people like a second view on the question their card raises. Psychic Maria can answer up to three questions in a personal email reading. Treat it as one more thing to reflect on. Your choices in 2027 are still yours.

Common questions

What is the tarot card of the year for 2027?

Justice, card XI in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, because 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11. In Marseille-style decks card XI is Strength, and in the Thoth deck it is Lust.

How do I calculate my personal tarot year card for 2027?

Add your birth month, your birth day and 2027 as whole numbers, then add the digits of the total. For March 15 that is 3 + 15 + 2027 = 2045, and 2 + 0 + 4 + 5 = 11, Justice. In 2027 the result is always between 5 (the Hierophant) and 17 (the Star).

Why does another calculator give me a different 2027 card?

It probably adds every single digit of the date instead of whole numbers. For March 15 that gives 20, Judgement. The two methods disagree for 278 of the 365 birthdays in 2027, so check which one a calculator uses.

What is the 2027 year card for a February 29 birthday?

2 + 29 + 2027 = 2058, and 2 + 0 + 5 + 8 = 15, so the Devil. Because 2027 has no February 29, some people use February 28 instead, which gives Temperance, or March 1, which gives the Lovers. Pick one rule and keep it every year.

Does a year card start on January 1 or on my birthday?

Either. Mary K. Greer described both cycles, January for outer events and the birthday for acting on what you learned, and later suggested January to June birthdays use the calendar year and July to December birthdays use birthday to birthday.
