Why the cards change hands on New Year's Eve
The Gregorian New Year is a civil date. It is not tied to any point in the Sun's path. This year it happens to sit almost on top of a decan line.

So in most of the world, the last few hours of 2026 run under the Two of Pentacles, a card about juggling, and 2027 opens under the Three, a card about building. Book T, the Golden Dawn's tarot manuscript, describes the Three as "Commencement of matters to be established later." A fitting line for January 1, though the fit is a coincidence of the calendar and nothing more.
The Devil, behind all four weeks
Book T gives the Devil a long title, "The Lord of the Gates of Matter, the Child of the Forces of Time", and places it on Capricorn. Arthur Edward Waite, whose 1909 deck was drawn by Pamela Colman Smith, called the chained pair on his card a picture of "the chain and fatality of the material life".
Read as a season card, the Devil asks what has its hooks in you: money, status, a habit, a person's approval. It is not a sign of evil or a curse. The Two covers the holidays. Book T's one-line meaning for it is "Pleasant change, visit to friends", and Waite calls it "a card of gaiety, recreation" before adding that it is also read as "news and messages in writing". Ten days of travel, family and year-end bills fit both readings.
The Three is the only card in the season with more than one person in it. In Smith's drawing the sculptor works while two figures look on, one of them holding a plan. Waite's meaning is short: "Métier, trade, skilled labor." Book T opens with "Working and constructive force, building up". If you are setting goals for 2027, this is the stretch that asks who else the goal depends on.
The Four is the tightest card of the three. Waite writes of the figure, "He holds to that which he has." Book T calls it "Assured material gain" but warns it may be "completed but leading to nothing beyond". Makara Sankranti falls inside this stretch, on January 14 and 15. Drik Panchang lists charity among the day's observances, which sets a giving festival in the middle of a holding card. That contrast is worth a few minutes of thought, whatever your beliefs.
Which court cards, and why sources disagree
Book T also gives each court card a 30-degree span. Two of them touch Capricorn. The Queen of Pentacles rules from 20 degrees Sagittarius to 20 degrees Capricorn, so her stretch ends at 5:22 p.m. IST on January 10. From there a Swords court card takes over until 20 degrees Aquarius.
That second card is the one sites disagree on. Book T calls it "The Prince of the Chariot of the Winds", and Rider-Waite-Smith decks have no princes. The transcription we used labels him the King of Swords, and some decan sites match him with the Knight instead. Both are defensible. The same goes for planets. Book T's decan rulers here are Jupiter, Mars and the Sun. Some modern astrology sites use a different scheme and give Saturn, Venus and Mercury instead. The cards are the same in both.
A three-line ledger for the season
This needs no shuffling and no spread. Take the Two, Three and Four of Pentacles out of your deck, or just write their names at the top of a page. At each handover, write one line under the card that is starting, in answer to its question from the table above. On January 20, read the three lines in order.
